LEAD, Sempra Energy, and 10News Honor Local Leaders for 2005

LEAD San Diego, in the third year of its partnership with 10News and Sempra Energy, honored ordinary people who are doing extraordinary things to improve the quality of life in the San Diego region at the 10News Leadership Award Gala on January 19, 2005 at the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park.

The 10 Leadership Awards highlight leaders of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds who are committed to building and strengthening our communities – something that is central to LEAD’s mission. Every Thursday on 10News Live @ 5, 10News correspondent Geni Cavitt hosts a segment in which these individuals are honored.

Harry Carter, chairman of the LEAD San Diego Board, and Molly Cartmill, immediate past chair and Director of Corporate Community Relations & Corporate Events for Sempra Energy, provided remarks at this inspirational gathering that brought together the community’s best and brightest leaders. Speakers included past 10News Leadership Award Recipient Ken Druck (2000), founder of the Jenna Druck Foundation and last years’ winner of the Quality of Life Award at LEAD San Diego’s annual event, the 2004 Visionary Awards. Joining him were Overall Leader of the Year Recipients Gidget Shultz (2001), founder of Gidget’s Way and Zara Marselian (2003), founder of La Maestra Family Clinic, who spoke about the positive effects of receiving the 10News Leadership Award.

The evening closed with the announcement of the 2004 Overall Leader of the Year Award, which was presented to Veleria Fabiszak. Fabiszak organized the San Diego chapter of the International Rett Syndrome Association and the Annual Run For Rett. She is currently overseeing construction of San Diego’s first universal playground for children with disabilities.
