The San Diego Visionary Awards

LEAD San Diego is now accepting nominations for the 2005 Visionary Awards. This will be the third year for this impressive—and growing—awards program that pays tribute to those who have demonstrated visionary leadership in our region. Do you know of someone who should be recognized with the popular Morgan Award? Who’s your favorite for categories such as Diversity, Quality of Life, or Economic Opportunity? Nominations are being accepted via an online form on the website through February 17—make sure your suggestions are considered!

LEAD celebrated the second annual Visionary Awards at its twenty-second annual meeting on the evening of June 7, 2004. Over 600 LEAD graduates, elected officials, community leaders and their guests were in attendance.

Presented by Sempra Energy and Wells Fargo in partnership with San Diego National Bank, KPBS, and Union Bank of California, the 2004 awards honored area community, business and public leaders who have demonstrated visionary leadership in a variety of categories. Support also came from The San Diego Union-Tribune, Washington Mutual, Qualcomm, San Diego Magazine, Burnham Real Estate and the San Diego Workforce Partnership.

The evening began with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and networking on the second floor of the new Omni Hotel at the Ballpark. Guests later moved inside the ballroom for dinner and the awards presentation followed by coffee and dessert.

The 2004 winners:

Regional Stewardship: Mel Katz, CEO, Manpower. Katz was honored for his efforts to balance individual community interests with the needs of our greater region.

2004 Morgan Award: First awarded in 1993, this award is named in recognition of retired newspaper columnist, editor and columnist Neil Morgan. This year it was presented to Tom Carter, President, Carter Reese & Associates for a lifetime of achievement in community leadership.

2004 Nathanson Award for Cross-Border Region Building: This new award was added for 2004. Named in memory of Charles E. Nathanson, a pioneer in modern San Diego thinking about our cross-border region, the award honors visionary leadership that recognizes and embraces a joint future between San Diego and Baja California. This year’s recipient was presented to Baja California Governor Eugenio Elorduy Walther.
