It’s hard to grasp the magnitude of what has happened
in South Asia. The earthquake and subsequent tsunami that
wreaked such devastation have forever changed the physical
and economic landscape of not only that entire region, but
of the world as well. Relief has been pouring in from all
over the globe in unprecedented numbers, and even though that
is certainly making a huge difference for all those in need,
there is already concern that the pledges of over $4 billion
may not come through as promised. When this story stops headlining
the news each night and the paper each morning will everyone
who is not personally involved or affected stop thinking about
it? If history is any indicator, it will likely happen.
I’m sure we’ve all done what our hearts have
told us to related to this tragedy, but there is a lesson
to be learned from the complacency that the relief workers
so fear. How often do we pledge to help others and not follow
through? How often do we disappoint those who need or rely
on us personally or professionally? LEAD San Diego is all
about service through leadership. As members, graduates, board,
and staff, we need to remember that each day. In the dictionary,
lead is defined as “to guide or direct, as by persuasion
or influence, to a course of action or thought.” By
being part of LEAD, we have all made the commitment to lead,
and to constantly strive to develop those leadership skills
so that our community might benefit. We’ve committed
to “guide ... to a course of action.” Those are
powerful words, and our diverse group of amazing individuals
does have the power to guide through persuasion and/or influence.
Let’s inspire ourselves and inspire each other to be
accountable each day, to learn each day, and to always follow
through on our pledges to each other, to our community, and
to our world.
I’m proud to serve as president of the board this term,
and proud to be among the finest leaders in our region. Here’s
to the promise of a great new year! I pledge to all of you
to do my best to serve this organization well.
