By the People: America in the World was launched in January
2003 and is a relatively new initiative of MacNeil/Lehrer
Productions. By the People uses local programming by PBS stations
in cooperation with community organizations, and national
and local forums for civic dialogue. The goal is to energize
and enhance the national conversation on America's role in
the world through a series of national and local broadcasts
and events that demonstrate the relevance of foreign policy
issues to local concerns.
Across the country on Oct. 16, participants of PBS Deliberation
Day engaged in spirited debate over two key national challenges:
improving national security and increasing the number of American
jobs in a competitive global economy.
"It left us both with a sense that we could respectfully
disagree, while cultivating a broader awareness of the impact
of this election," Erik Kingston, an Idaho participant,
said about his experience.
The discussion groups -- representative samples of the local
population -- gathered in 17 cities, including San Diego,
to try to get a "behind the headlines" look at what's
really at stake in this year's election.
The dialogue was the product of a local and national cooperation
between community leaders, By the People and PBS.
